As of this week, the 50 emergency nursing packs we purchased last year are officially en route to Vanuatu, after COVID-19 played havoc with our planned implementation.

Our major fundraising campaign for 2020, the Emergency Essentials project aims to equip every local emergency nurse with a critical Nursing Pack containing fundamental equipment used to measure patients vital signs. These packs have never before existed in the VCH Emergency Department. With the outstanding support of Kiwi nurse/MJF Volunteer Leigh Elton and on-the-ground nurse Libby White, local emergency nursing staff will be trained in their use, supporting the development of a sophisticated triaging system to prevent unnecessary deaths.

Each pack is stocked with brand new equipment, as per our donation guidelines — a stethoscope for assessing heart and lungs, thermometer for measuring temperature, pupil torch, pulse oximeter for assessing lung oxygenation and a carry pouch.

Through the Emergency Essentials project, 50 emergency nurses will now have access to these affordable essentials packs, streamlining the care of deteriorating patients and allowing for timely life-saving treatment.

We are thrilled the packs are finally on their way and can’t wait to continue to support the rollout and associated training.
