Infusion Pumps Essential to Effective Care

We have been really busy recently organising our next crate of medical supplies. This year MJF Health has been working in close partnership with the heads of the medical and paediatric departments, who identified infusion pumps as pieces of medical equipment they needed desperately. Infusion pumps and syringe drivers are used to deliver fluid and medication to patients at a controlled rate, which is especially important in children and babies, who might only need a few millilitres of fluid an hour.

Without this important piece of medical equipment, fluid is given using only gravity, which is pretty difficult to predict! Using infusion pumps is the standard of care here in Australia, for all patients receiving intravenous medications or fluids, and at the moment the VCH paediatric and medical departments only have two working pumps. We are proud to be supplying the medical and paediatric wards with six infusion pumps and two syringe drivers, as well as a lot of other much needed medical equipment!

We work hard to make sure that the equipment we donate is going to be as useful and long lasting as possible, so we’ve been working in close partnership with the heads of the paediatric and medical departments as well as the maintenance and biomedical teams to build a list of the most needed and useful items of medical equipment, which are easy to use and maintain and of a high quality. To read more about our approach to the donation of medical equipment read through our guidelines here.

According to VCH’s Head of Medical Department Dr. Sereana Natuman, every item in the MJF’s recent crate delivery has already been used at least once, from the nasal cannulas to the defibrillator.
